Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Angelo TX
620 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026

...New AVIATION...

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Heavy rain potential for portions of the area mainly west of a
Sonora to San Angelo to Sweetwater line for Thursday afternoon
through Friday morning. A slight risk of excessive rainfall has
been issued for portions of west central Texas.

&&

.SHORT TERM...
(Today and tonight)
Issued at 205 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026

Gulf moisture continues to stream into the region as evidenced by
stratus developing over the northwest Hill Country early this
morning. Stratus deck will continue to stream northward through
the morning hours. Should see some breaks in the clouds this
afternoon with dry conditions prevailing. Highs will climb into
the lower 80s. Could see some light showers develop tonight
across the northern Edwards Plateau but the better rain chances
will be during the day on Thursday- see the long term discussion
below for more details.

&&

.LONG TERM...
(Thursday night through next Wednesday)
Issued at 1137 PM CDT Tue Oct 27 2026

On Thursday a large upper level trough will be located across the
western CONUS. An embedded upper level shortwave trough will track
northeast across West Texas late Thursday into Friday. Meanwhile the
remnant mid and upper level moisture from Tropical Storm Vance will
move north into the region. The combination of abundant low level
moisture in the Gulf along with the added upper level moisture from
the remnants of Vance will result in the potential for locally heavy
rainfall across the area. The current forecast has medium to high
(40-90%) rain chances across the area Thursday. Rain chances
increase even more Thursday night into Friday morning, with medium
to high (60-100%) rain chances. The highest rain chances will be
across the western half of the area. The main question, as is
usually the case, is where the heaviest rain ends up. Some of the
guidance indicates the heaviest rain occurring across West Central
Texas, especially the western half of the area. Other model guidance
has the axis of heaviest rain to our west, across the Trans-Pecos
region and Permian Basin. Ultimately, it will depend on the eventual
track of the aforementioned upper level shortwave trough. We should
have a better idea in the next 24 hours as more high resolution
model guidance begins to extend into that time frame. The main
concern continues to be locally heavy rainfall as precipitable water
values increase to 1.6 to 1.9 inches. The locally heavy rainfall may
result in flooding. Highs on Thursday will be in the mid 70s to
lower 80s, with highs on Friday in the low to mid 70s

Low end (20-30%) rain chances are forecast on Saturday (Halloween).
Drier conditions are then forecast for the evening hours. The next
upper level trough will approach the forecast area Sunday into
Monday. There are differences in the timing and strength of this
feature, so confidence remain low for this time frame. This upper
level trough/low will bring the next chance of rain, especially
Monday into Monday night. For now, rain chances were kept in the 20-
30% range.

.AVIATION...
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 615 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026

Stratus will continue spreading across the terminals this morning.
Mainly MVFR conditions are expected, but ceilings could
occasionally lower to IFR at times. Otherwise, VFR conditions will
return in the afternoon. Winds will remain out of the south near
10 knots, with some gusts near 17 knots in the afternoon.
