Area Forecast Discussion

000 FXUS64 KLUB 281110 AFDLUB Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lubbock TX 610 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... Issued at 606 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026 - Patchy fog again possible across much of the area Wednesday morning. - Rain remains expected later Thursday through Friday. && .SHORT TERM... (Tonight through Thursday) Issued at 1027 PM CDT Tue Oct 27 2026 Southerly surface winds will remain in place overnight and forecast soundings indicate resultant moisture getting trapped under a roughly 5 degree inversion around 4-5am. Patchy fog and/or low cloud cover looks to overspread areas on the Caprock before burning off around mid-morning. The inversion stays generally in place through late afternoon and thus mostly cloudy skies will continue for most of the day Wednesday. As such, the temperature forecast is again tricky. If clouds clear a bit sooner, highs should warm into the mid 70s to near 80. If they persist through sunset, it will be similar as today with highs struggling to get out the 60s. Mid-level southwest flow will help to advect moisture associated Tropical Storm Vance over our again on Thursday. Skies will become overcast through the day with rain beginning late-afternoon and pushing northward through the evening. && .LONG TERM... (Thursday night through next Tuesday) Issued at 1027 PM CDT Tue Oct 27 2026 An upper trough axis will slowly track across the area overnight Thursday into Friday. All models generally concur for rain persisting throughout the entire day, with the heaviest rain looking to occur during the midday hours. Cooler temperatures will accompany the dreary day, with highs only in the low-to-mid 60s. Rain will gradually taper off late Friday into Saturday. Confidence decreases slightly thereafter. A trailing shortwave may bring additional rain chances on Saturday with the ECMWF much more aggressive than the GFS, although ensembles are tending to favor more in the way of scattered showers which makes a bit more sense as the wave is generally weak and much of the moisture will have moved through on Friday. In any case, total rainfall around 1.5-2" is currently expected, with locally higher amounts possible particularly across the southern South Plains. Stay tuned for further updates. A weak ridge gives a reprieve on Sunday morning before another system moves in later Sunday into Monday. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 606 AM CDT Wed Oct 28 2026 IFR ceilings are currently impacting KPVW and KLBB. Fog is also impacting KPVW, however visibilities remain VFR. These conditions will clear after sunrise and conditions will return to VFR. VFR conditions will prevail at KCDS. There is another possibility for fog at KPVW and KLBB Thursday morning, however confidence at the moment is low. && .LUB WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. && $$ SHORT TERM...19 LONG TERM....19 AVIATION...10
