000 FXUS65 KMSO 281005 AFDMSO Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Missoula MT 405 AM MDT Wed Oct 28 2026 .DISCUSSION... KEY MESSAGES: - Anticipate cooler temperatures and periods of valley rain and mountain snow through the weekend. Northern Rockies is currently under westerly flow aloft as a low pressure system is dropping southward along the Pacific Northwest coast. This system is ushering in a fetch of moisture causing numerous showers across the region. Snow levels appear to be hovering around 4000 feet this morning with snow sticking to roadways above 5000 feet. Lolo, Lost Trail and Marias passes will be dealing with snow covered roads through mid to late morning. The low pressure system will continue to dig along the coast causing the upper level flow to become more southwesterly over the Northern Rockies. This flow pattern will keep periods of showers over the region, but snow levels will be rising up to 6000 feet. The low pressure system is anticipated to track across the Northern Rockies Saturday night into Sunday causing cooler temperatures and widespread precipitation once again. The long term models are indicating a ridge of high pressure building over the region by mid next week causing a warming and drying trend especially in the higher terrain. The valleys will be dealing with inversions potentially causing fog under this pattern for the first week of November. && .AVIATION...Numerous showers will be tracking across the Northern Rockies today into this evening.
